Mission Statement

The Jackson Fire Department will provide Fire and Life Safety Services to the citizens and visitors of Jackson by implementing aggressive fire suppression, community-based fire safety programs, comprehensive prevention inspections and pre-emergency planning.

The Jackson Fire Department is striving to be the best with new technology, updated equipment (clothing, turnout gear, new fire apparatus), training, and more fire protection/safety programs. Also, we are on the path to be fully staffed by the end of 2019 which will help to retain our class 3 fire rating and move toward a class 2 rating.

The leader of the Jackson Fire Department is Chief Willie G. Owens who has thirty two (32) years with the department. He is a graduate of Jackson State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Health and Physical Education and Fire Science Technology.

Chief Owens is a visionary in that he has brought many ideas to the department:

  1. Petition civil service to change the promotional list from one (1) year to two (2) years, enabling more candidates to promote from the list.
  2. Establishing a better relationship with the State Fire Academy in order to make a smooth matriculation through the academy, and to train more of our personnel, which will save the city funds.
  3. Reaching out to HUD for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) for the purchase of a 100’ Aerial Ladder Truck, cost $1.2 millions
  4. Lowering the age limit for entering the department from 21 to 18 years of age.
  5. Planning to establish a curriculum In Jackson Public School in order to train students about the operation of the department. This will allow them to possibly become Certified Firefighters right out of high school.

These are a few innovative parts to a big puzzle that is on the way for completion.
