CITY OF JACKSON UPDATE FOR FRIDAY EVENING
(JACKSON, MS) – The City of Jackson is issuing the following updates for Friday, March 5, 2021, related to the ongoing water crisis and recovery efforts being made as a result of recent winter weather:
WATER RESTORATION
- We had another good day today with pressure staying consistent around 85 psi. We look forward to continuing this trend and to filling our tanks further throughout the weekend so that next week we can focus on sampling and getting boil water notices lifted.
-
- We are gauging progress by measuring the psi (pounds per square inch) in the water distribution system. The goal is to reach ~ 90 psi at OB Curtis WTP and ~80 psi at JH Fewell WTP. When the winter weather came through, psi dropped to 37 resulting in water outages throughout the City of Jackson and City of Byram.
- We have gotten permission to begin sampling the well water system as of today. Once we achieve 48 hours of consistency on the surface water system, we can look toward doing the same there.
- There are still some small pockets in the city that are struggling. We estimate ~5K out of the 43K connections on our surface water system are still seeing some issues. We are continuing to work to identify and test solutions.
- Our teams continue to knock down the list of water main breaks/leaks as a result of this event. A total of 91 water main breaks/ leaks have been reported throughout the City. 72 repairs have been completed as of tonight. 19 reported breaks/leaks are still outstanding of which 11 have been confirmed and MS 811 Locate requested. A detailed list is at the end of this release. Ten (10) previously reported issues on this list were found to not actually be water main breaks/leaks.
- Overall, we are encouraged by the fact that most of the connections that experienced outages and low pressure across the city have been restored. We have made tremendous progress from where we were on Monday.
- Please continue to report any water main breaks/leaks to 311.
- A system-wide precautionary boil water notice is still in effect for all surface water connections (~43K connections) and all well water connections (~16K connections).
