City of Jackson Update – 3/4/2021

Posted on March 4, 2021

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 4, 2021

CITY OF JACKSON UPDATE FOR THURSDAY EVENING

(JACKSON, MS) – The City of Jackson is issuing the following updates for Thursday, March 4, 2021, related to the ongoing water crisis and recovery efforts being made as a result of recent winter weather:

WATER RESTORATION

  • TODAY IS A GOOD DAY. Pressure recovered overnight and throughout the day to reach 85 psi. Water is flowing in the system. Our tanks are being filled. Residents that lost pressure yesterday have seen water return. And, we are getting reports that some residents in South and West Jackson, farthest from our plants, are starting to see water restored.
    • We are gauging progress by measuring the psi (pounds per square inch) in the water distribution system. The goal is to reach ~ 90 psi at OB Curtis WTP and ~80 psi at JH Fewell WTP. When the winter weather came through, psi dropped to 37 resulting in water outages throughout the City of Jackson and City of Byram.
  • There are still some pockets in the City that continue to struggle. Our teams are working alongside contractors and vendors to investigate solutions and triple check everything from hydrants to valves in order to get everyone fully restored and avoid any further setbacks.
  • Our teams continue to knock down the list of water main breaks/leaks as a result of this event. A total of 101 water main breaks/ leaks have been reported throughout the City. 70 repairs have been completed as of tonight. 31 reported breaks/leaks are still outstanding of which four (4) have been confirmed and MS 811 Locate requested. A detailed list is at the end of this release. Please continue to report any water main breaks/leaks to 311.
  • A system-wide precautionary boil water notice is still in effect for all surface water connections (~43K connections) and all well water connections (~16K connections). The next milestone in this recovery is to fill our tanks enough to begin sampling the water to determine if/when we can remove boil water notices.
  • We are very encouraged and look forward to another promising day tomorrow and over the weekend.

  • NON-POTABLE (FLUSHING) WATER will be available Friday, March 5th from 9am to 6pm.
