Headline story

From scattered demolitions to a coordinated strategy

The goal is not simply to remove unsafe structures. It is to concentrate public investment where it can rebuild confidence, connect parcels, and make housing and commercial redevelopment more viable.

Why targeted investment matters

Vacant commercial buildings, abandoned apartments, and clusters of deteriorated houses can suppress nearby property values, attract illegal dumping, and discourage families and businesses from investing.

The City’s approach focuses demolition and cleanup along Terry Road, McDowell Road, and Belvedere Drive. Parcel-level blight and vacancy data will help align demolition with redevelopment potential, neighborhood needs, and other public improvements.

Public Works coordination will help reinforce the investment through right-of-way cleanup and related corridor improvements, reducing the chance that cleared land becomes the next cycle of neglect.

Commercial demolition

High-impact commercial and multifamily sites are prioritized to remove corridor anchors of blight and prepare surrounding areas for renewed investment.

Residential demolition

Approximately 35 residential structures are targeted in clusters, at an estimated average cost of about $17,000 per property.
