The mission of the Department of Parks and Recreation is to enhance the physical and recreational needs of the public by enhancing the quality of life of our patrons and promoting positive, recreational programming through coaching, teaching, mentoring, preserving, protecting, and enhancing its parklands and public green space.
Did you know that approximately 2,300 acres of land in the City of Jackson are composed of our fifty-five (55) city parks and facilities? The areas include: playgrounds, swimming pools, golf courses, tennis courts, picnic grounds, and jogging and walking paths. In addition, our special facilities include: community centers, which are available for public use; Smith Wills Stadium; Mynelle Gardens, which is the city’s botanical gardens; and the Jackson Zoo. We always set the safety of our patrons as top priority, so all properties are patrolled by the City of Jackson Park Rangers.
The City of Jackson also offers a wide variety of recreational programs. Our Athletics Division offers youth and adults softball, flag football, and basketball and baseball leagues. In addition, our division offers swimming, golfing, and tennis lessons. Citizens can also enjoy our exciting neighborhood festivals, after school programs, and seasonal clinics.
