When is a building permit required?

You must obtain a building permit before breaking ground on any new construction, building an addition on to any existing structure, or altering an existing structure. A building permit is not required for basic, nonstructural repairs such as carpet replacement, painting, siding replacement or other work that does not enlarge or alter the basic structure of the building.

A building permit is also required for the following:

  • All accessory (storage) buildings greater than 108 square feet
  • All accessory buildings less than 108 square feet that include a permanent foundation
  • Storm shelters of ANY kind
  • In-ground swimming pools

Trade permits for electrical, plumbing, fuel gas, and mechanical work are separate from the building permit. For help determining whether your project requires a building permit, please call 601.960.1159 to speak with a City of Jackson permit staff member.
