The Fire Chief is responsible for the overall operation and direction of the Department through the implementation of the strategic plan to ensure that its objectives are consistent with the City of Jackson's mission, vision and values. 
The City of Jackson is proud to have Chief R.D. Simpson serving in this capacity and looks forward to the influential work of our Fire Department to sustain its level of excellence.

Chief R.D. Simpson, a native of Jackson, Mississippi, began his professional fire service career in 1993 with the City of Jackson Fire Department. Chief Simpson is well respected among firefighters in the City and the County for his professionalism and his ability to build strong relations between career firefighters and volunteers.  In his 20 years of service, he has held the following positions: Firefighter, Lieutenant in the Emergency Service Division, Captain/Emergency Medical Technician in the Emergency Service Division, Division Chief of Training, and Deputy Chief of the Emergency Service Division.

Chief Simpson’s educational background includes a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Jackson State University and a master’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health from Columbia Southern University. He has served as the Public Information Officer for the Jackson Fire Department for the past ten years.

Chief Simpson resides in Jackson, Mississippi with his wife and their five children.


Divisions

The department consist of 7 divisions:
  • Administration and Finance
  • Arson and Internal Affairs
  • Community Relations and Fire Safety Education
  • Emergency Services
  • Fire Loss Management 
  • Office of the Fire Marshal
  • Training, Safety, Research, and Development

The Division of Emergency Services is our largest division, this division consists of 21 fire stations and is comprised of 35  Emergency Operation Vehicles.
During the first part of 2012 the City of Jackson Fire Department upgraded all of its self-contained breathing apparatuses (SCBA) along with new Ultra-Lite face pieces.

Updates to the Fire Department
The City of Jackson Fire Department is constantly striving for improvement and the highest level of firefighting, by updating and purchasing the latest firefighting equipment and technology such as:
  • Chemical Detectors / Weather stations
  • Lifepak AEDs
  • Personal Protective Gear
  • Portable Radios
  • Web Cam enabled laptops for ESD
  • Scott Eagle Imagers
  • Thermal cameras
  • TSI Portacount Plus Respirator fit testers
  • Video conference systems
  • A computer lab for continuing education
In the summer of 2013 the City of Jackson Fire Department received 7 new fire trucks to augment their fleet. The new apparatus that we put into place consists of (4) rescue pumpers and (3) 75' aerial ladders.
