A native of Walls, Mississippi, Dr. Leslie McLemore earned his Bachelor's degree in Social Science and Economics from Rust College and his Master's degree in Political Science from Atlanta University.
He also received his Doctorate in Government from the University of Massachusetts. Currently, Councilman McLemore is a professor of Political Science at Jackson State University and Director of the Fannie Lou Hamer National Institute on Citizenship and Democracy.
He is a veteran of the Southern Civil Rights Movement, the founding President of Rust College's chapter of the NAACP, northern regional coordinator for the Freedom Vote campaign in 1963 and Vice-Chairman of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party.
He has also authored several articles on Black Politics, the Civil Rights Movement and Environmental Politics. McLemore has done much to modernize the City Council through his service as the former President for three years.
He and his wife, Betty, have one son, Leslie II.
