Mission Statement

To implement and manage an integrated Solid Waste Management System including the collection of household garbage and trash, recycling, solid waste disposal, and the execution of programs and projects that enhance neighborhood cleanliness and community responsibility.

The Solid Waste Division is dedicated to providing excellent customer service to the residents of Jackson through the bi-weekly pick-up of household garbage waste and a host of solid waste services which are provided by your monthly fees.

The City of Jackson will not collect residential garbage or recyclable material on the following holidays:

  • January 1st - New Year's Day
  • January 16th - Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday
  • July 4th - The Fourth of July
  • November 22nd - Thanksgiving Day
  • December 25th - Christmas Day

Solid Waste Programs

Bulky Items Program (2nd Garbage Collection Day)



The Solid Waste Division will collect two bulky items from your curbside every 2nd collection day. These items include furniture, hot water heaters, loveseats, mattresses, box springs, microwaves, radios, televisions, sofas, stoves, toilets, washers, dryers, limbs, and bagged leaves.

Limbs and Leaves

  • Leaves must be placed in a commercial plastic bag for collection
  • Limbs must be no longer then 4ft
  • Piled no higher then 3 feet
  • Neatly stacked to the curbside
  • Limbs do not have to be tied up
  • Limbs can be placed in trash container

Curbside Recycling



The curbside recycling programs gives all homeowners the opportunity to recycle plastics, papers, and aluminum. Recyclables can be placed at your curb for collection.
Recyclables include:
  • Plastic
  • Paper
  • Aluminum Cans

Recyclable Drop-Off Location

Residents who do not have curbside service and wish to recycle can drop off recyclable materials at the below location.

Roll-Off Dumpster Day



      
   ROLL OFF DUMPSTER AND E-WASTE DAY
Saturday, June 8, 2013
8 a.m. - 3 p.m. (Weather Permitting)
 

 

The City of Jackson and its e-waste partner Allen’s Recycling is encouraging citizens of Jackson to participate in Roll-Off Dumpster Day. Residents can take tree limbs, other yard debris, and household items to one of the following locations on Saturday, June 8, 2013 from 8 a.m. until 3 p.m., weather permitting. 
 

Ward 1         

Westbrook Road, east of soccer field

Lakeover Road (east off Livingston Road, 1 block of north of Beasley Road)

 

Ward 3

JPS Enochs Complex, 101 Near Street

 

Ward 4         

Twelve Oaks Circle (west of Highway 18, just south of Metrocenter Mall)

 

Ward 5

Myer & Oakmont Streets, across from Post Office parking lot

 

Ward 6           

Blackmon & Cypress Road, south off Brookleigh Drive, 1 block west of Terry Road

 

Ward 7           

Greymont & Moody Streets

        

Residents may bring all household furniture, small appliances and accessories for disposal. However, tires, chemicals, and gas tanks are not accepted in the Roll-Off Dumpster program. Participants are required to place debris inside dumpster provided at the locations.

 
Local businesses and residents living outside of Jackson are not eligible to participate. Proof of residency may be required.

Used Tire Collection Program



Residents can dispose of up to 10 tires per month at the Jackson Solid Waste Facility located at 6810 I-55 S. Frontage Road, Byram, MS.

Appliance Collection and Recycling Program

Residents can recycle all metal appliances by calling the Solid Waste Division to schedule curbside pickup at no charge. Appliances include White goods (such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners), hot water heaters, stoves, washers and dryers which can be placed along the curbside on your 2nd garbage collection day of the week or dropped off FREE of charge at the City of Jackson’s Rubbish Landfill in Byram.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal

The ESC is a permanent drop off site for unused household items that are usually labeled: CAUTION, POISONOUS, TOXIC, FLAMMABLE, or CORROSIVE which include but not limited to antifreeze, used motor oil, oil filers, batteries, electronics, latex paint, oil based thinners and stains, aerosols, pesticides, liquid and powder fluorescent light bulbs, and photographic fixer/developer. Residents may also purchase re-mixed paint at $4.00 per gallon.

The Great American Cleanup

Each spring the Solid Waste Division along with Keep Jackson Beautiful participates in the nation's largest organized cleanup. Neighborhood organizations, schools, businesses and other groups can call Solid Waste to receive information on how to organize a cleanup in their area.


Illegal Dumping Program

Persons caught illegally dumping debris can be taken to Environmental Court where they can be fined up to $1,000 and receive up to six months in jail. To report illegal dumping, call 960-1193.


City of Jackson's Solid Waste Landfill (Byram)

Residents may discard of household rubbish waste, construction materials, tires, metal appliances and household debris at the City of Jackson’s Landfill in Byram.Tires and metal appliances are recycled.
