WEST STREET TRAFFIC ALERT: June 12, 2013
On Wednesday, June 12, 2013, construction will begin on West Street between Marshall Street and Woodrow Wilson Avenue. The project will consist of replacing a 90-year-old water line, three feet of Yazoo clay and old asphalt with suitable soils and new asphalt. City workers will also replace curb and gutter and sidewalks. Due to the narrow right-of-way along West Street and the scale of the project, the following travel restrictions will be put into place:
-
West Street southbound will be CLOSED to all traffic from Woodrow Wilson Avenue to Millsaps Avenue. Traffic will be detoured along Woodrow Wilson Avenue, State Street, and Fortification Street. Local traffic can use Lamar Street as an alternate route in the neighborhood.
-
West Street northbound will be OPEN but reduced to one lane. Vehicles over 12 feet wide should use an alternate route. A detour will not be posted for wide loads.
-
West Street sidewalks will be CLOSED from Woodrow Wilson Avenue to Millsaps Avenue. Construction crews will work in close proximity to the sidewalks and will ultimately remove and replace the sidewalks. For pedestrians’ safety, the sidewalk will be closed. Pedestrians should use alternate routes during construction.
-
Neighborhood streets within the construction zone will be subject to closures as construction crews reach each street and begin work to replace the water line followed by replacing the Yazoo clay. Motorists should use adjacent streets in the neighborhood to bypass the closures.
The closures will last two to three months. Once work on the southbound side of West Street is completed, similar closures and restrictions will be put in place for the northbound side of West Street.
Throughout this project, motorists should drive with care and watch out for construction equipment within the work zone. Work on this project will occur during daytime hours.

Mission Statement
The Infrastructure Management Division provides efficient management of the City's streets, bridges, drainage, and traffic infrastructure.
This division is comprised of four sections:
- The Infrastructure Management Administrative Section includes the management of all streets, bridges, drainage and traffic maintenance improvements. This section coordinates maintenance activities with street repair, traffic maintenance, bridges and drainage crews and provides the administration of the street resurfacing, mosquito abatement, street cleaning/sweeping, and the drainage channel herbicide contracts.
- The Paved Street Section repairs potholes, street defects, and level dips; removes large debris from the traveled roadway (illegal dumping or items which have fallen from vehicles); administers the "Pothole Hotline" (601-960-POTH) where calls can be placed to report and request pothole repairs; improves road shoulders to ensure that the integrity of the road base is not undermined; resurfaces selected residential, collector, and arterial streets; and provides maintenance on various city-owned parking facilities.
- The Bridges and Drainage Section constructs headwalls and retaining walls; cuts and removes trees from the traveled roadway, which have fallen during or after storms, as well as trees that have fallen into drainage channels; administers a Flood Prevention Program by maintaining the flow of storm water through ditches, pipes and inlets; and implements the Corrugated Pipe Replacement Program, which replaces deteriorated metal pipes and inspects, cleans, unblocks, repairs, replaces, and installs storm water inlets and pipes.
- The Traffic Section installs and maintains regulatory and warning traffic control devices to ensure safe and efficient use of public streets/right-of-way.
