The Signs and License Division is responsible for enforcement of the Sign Ordinance which was enacted by City Council to:

• Preserve and protect the aesthetic value of land,

• Promote a pleasant environment while providing for a consistent regulation of commercial signs,

• Reducing the risk of distraction or confusion to drivers,

• Eliminate structural hazards

• Protect and promote the tourism industry by providing an unobstructed view of the City's scenic areas.

General Information

All signs except certain exempt signs require an approved sign permit from the City. To be approved, a sign must meet the rules and standards of the City's Sign Ordinance. Applications for Signs are available at the Signs and License Division or can be printed online.

How do I apply for a sign permit?

A permit application must be completed and submitted to the Signs & License Division located on the first floor of the Hood Building, located at 200 S. President St. In addition to the application the following must be submitted:

Drawing of the sign(s) showing whether the sign if building mounted, ground mounted or free standing.

• Dimension of the sign(s) which includes the square footage and overall height if ground mounted or free standing.
• A plot drawing of the property showing streets, buildings, setback of sign(s) and placement of sign(s)
• Zoning Approval

Follow-up by the Division Inspectors

The Signs and License inspectors are responsible for locating illegal signs and notifying owners who must comply with the Sign Ordinance within a designed period or be fined. If you have any concerns about a sign, please call the office for additional information

If a sign is erected before a permit fee is paid, the permit fee can be doubled.

If a sign permit is not obtained, court action may be taken and a fine is probable.
