Eastover Drive Waterline Project Underway Using 1 Percent Sales Tax Funds

Mayor Tony T. Yarber, 1 Percent Sales Tax Commission members, city officials, residents and business owners gathered Tuesday, July 5, at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Eastover Drive water line replacement project.

The project is part of the 1 Percent Sales Tax Program and will involve replacing a more than 60-year-old line that has been plagued with repeated breaks. The project will cost $1.4 million. It will consist of removing 5,000 linear feet of the existing cast iron pipe between I-55 North Frontage Road and Ridgewood Road and replacing it with a new ductile iron pipe with polywrap.

“This is one of the many projects that will move our city closer to a more stable infrastructure. In the last year, alone, this line has had 16 to 20 breaks,” Mayor Yarber said. “We’ve heard our residents’ concerns and are moving as quickly as possible to get more of these 1 Percent Sales Tax projects underway.”

Southern Consultants, Inc., will oversee the project, which is expected to take about five months to complete. Meanwhile, water service will continue from the old line until the new line is completely in place.
