Neighbors First Program Opens May 2

The City of Jackson’s Neighbors First program opens May 2, officially starting the 180-day window residents have to acquire property located on their street at a minimal cost.

The City completed an educational campaign earlier this month. Hundreds of Jackson residents attended weekend workshops, where they received instruction on navigating online land rolls and identifying available properties. The City has begun taking applications. Applicants will be notified of their application review dates in advance.

For the first 180 days, the option to purchase the City-owned properties will only be extended to qualified homeowners who live adjacent to the properties. Then, the option is extended to Neighborhood Associations or other stakeholders within the neighborhood or community.
After the 180 days, the program will open citywide until all the properties are transferred and back on the tax roll. Only Jackson residents are eligible to participate in the program.

The Neighbors First Program is designed to address blight and revitalize underutilized residential properties by allowing the City to transfer City-owned lots in a pre-determined planning area to the neighbors of those properties for a designated amount. The program requires the resident to own property in the neighborhood, street or block.
